This is the westbound view of Guard Gate 5 at Herkimer, NY. Its purpose is to protect Plantation Island and Erie Canal Lock 18 from floodwaters by diverting them into the natural Mohawk River which runs alongside the canal at this location. The Herkimer Terminal is right behind the Guard Gate to the right.
